We often perform an activity on many sites that is constantly evolving and improving (and sometimes vice versa). This is registration. It is about the different methods and features of registration on sites that I would like to talk to you about. This is not a massive study, but just small and (hopefully) useful excerpts from my experience as an interface designer. An example of successful registration on the Tumblr website.
I’ll start with the definition of the very concept of “registration”; with it, everything is not as simple as it might seem. As a result of field research of our company, it turned out that different people (clients, visitors and ourselves) often perceive this word differently. In order to avoid misunderstanding, I will describe how I myself see registration.
What is registration
Registration is a necessary step for the user to gain access to the opportunities that are provided on any Internet resource. Registration takes place only once (ideally). After a person has completed it, the opportunities that are available on this resource become available to him.
How does registration work? When a user registers somewhere for the first time, he usually needs to come up with a username and password. Just come up with, create a new login and a new password for it.
The login can be either an email address, or a mobile phone number, or a last name and first name, or a nickname. Often, when registering, there is an important point: you need to confirm your Email, or verify your smartphone number.
It would seem, why such difficulties? After all, in order to confirm your mail, you need to open it, find a confirmation letter there, or follow other instructions. To confirm the fact that the number belongs to you, you receive a confirmation code on your phone, or a reset call, or another indication of some necessary action.
What is all this for? Maybe there’s some easier way to register? No, because this is the only way to prove two necessary facts. First, it checks that you have access to mail or telephone. Secondly, it is confirmed that you entered your email address or mobile number correctly, without a single mistake.
How to confirm your email or mobile address when registering
Let’s say that when registering as a login, you need to enter your email address. How can I confirm it? As noted above, you need to open your mail and find there a letter from the site where you are registering. The letter may not arrive immediately, but after a few minutes or more.
In addition, it is worth checking the Spam folder in your mail; the letter could have ended up there by mistake. If enough time has passed, but the letter cannot be found, then perhaps an error was made when entering the email. It's worth trying to register again.
If a letter has arrived to confirm your email address, you need to open it and read it. Typically, you should click on the link in this email. This click on the link is proof that you are a real user of the mailbox.
What if during registration the smartphone number is used as a login? How to verify mobile? You usually receive an SMS with a confirmation code or a push notification on your phone. At the same time, short and clear instructions are given on what the user needs to do to confirm their mobile number.
To confirm a mobile number, a reset call is sometimes used. There is no need to answer it. It is necessary to determine the last digits in the number from which they are calling. Typically you should enter the last four digits. For example, a call came from number +7. Then to confirm you need to enter code 7890.
Registration takes place once.
I recommend writing it down in a notebook, notebook, etc. name of the site (application), login and password, or otherwise save this data. The password can most often be recovered using email or a smartphone. To do this, the site may have a link “Forgot your password?”.
But with a login it is more difficult; it is not always possible to restore it in case of forgetfulness. In any case, there will be less stress and loss of time if you can find your username and password somewhere in your records.
Computer literacy with Nadezhda
Most sites are free. However, when visiting a site, you are often required to perform certain actions, called registration, in order to gain access:
- to extended resource content and
- to its additional functionality.
Let's try to understand the following questions:
- What is registration on the site?
- Registration on the site and logging into the site, what is the difference?
- How to register on the site?
- What is login and password?
- About the terms of use of a particular site
- Regular registration on the site - the first type of registration
- Registration on the site through social networks is the second type of registration
- Invites - the third method of registration
- Trust but check
What does registering on the site give?
Registration on a website is an action aimed at creating a personal account on a web resource in order to gain access to its full functionality (whether advanced capabilities or access to pages of Internet resources, which can only be viewed after registration).
That is, registration is a way to log in (or gain the ability to log in) to a specific web resource. In most cases, this process is mandatory, especially for social networks, where the capabilities of users without registration are limited.
Registration on the site and logging into the site, what is the difference?
Entry is possible only after registration has been completed. It is enough to register on the site once, and then you can repeatedly access the site through the “Login” or “Login” options. Thus, we register on a site only once, and then go to it as needed as many times as necessary.
Let's look at specific examples of the difference between Registration on a site and Login to it. Figure 1 shows the government services portal, where you first need to register only once (number 2 in Figure 1). Then you can access this portal as many times as you like through the “Login” button (number 1 in Fig. 1).
Rice. 1 Registration and login on the public services portal
Below, Figure 2 shows Yandex.mail. Here, too, we register once using the “Create a mailbox” button – number 2 in Fig. 2, more about this here.
After registration you will be able to use Yandex.mail
- through the “Login” button (number 1 in Fig. 2),
- or through social networks (number 3 in Fig. 2).

How to register on the site?
There is no uniform registration system on all websites. On each site, registration occurs according to the rule “who knows what,” which is more like the absence of any rules. However, there are some general points. Let's start with the terms used when registering on sites.
As a rule, immediately after registration a
- user account,
- it is also called an account,
- sometimes it is the user’s personal account.
On the Internet you can also find the following expressions regarding registration on sites:
- Login (from the word “Authorization” means entering your username and password received when registering on the site).
- Login (means “Enter login”, sometimes this means register, sometimes it means logging in with your username and password).
- Register (short for “Register”, that is, “to register”).
Thus, usually the common features (phenomena) of all registrations are a login and password.
What is login and password?
Login is a name consisting of letters (Latin or Russian) and numbers that the user comes up with for himself. Sometimes a login is called a nickname. You can come up with just one login (nickname) and use it wherever possible. The login must be unique, that is, a user with such a login must be the one and only on the site where he registers.
Therefore, if there is a user on the site with the login “compgramotnost” or “Nadezhda”, then a new user who wants to use a similar name (nickname) can be recommended to add numbers, for example, “compgramotnost01” or “Nadezhda01”.
The password usually consists of at least 6 characters. I wrote about other features when creating a password here. For security purposes, asterisks are usually displayed when entering a password during the registration or login process. This prevents you from snooping on your password from the computer screen. Some sites themselves provide a password, although you can usually change it later.
Logins and passwords should definitely be saved so as not to forget, for example, by writing them down in a paper notebook or using special programs - so-called password managers.
In addition to your login and password, when registering on a site you also often need to provide an e-mail. To register on “dubious” sites that do not inspire trust, you can use a temporary e-mail, which you can read about here.
About the terms of use of a particular site
When registering, some sites ask you to read the “Terms of Use” or “Privacy Policy”, “License Agreement”, etc. At the very least, if you do not check the box indicating that you have read these conditions, the registration will not take place. I read the terms and conditions, but I didn’t read them, but please tick the box.
Such “Terms of Use” are written, as a rule, in the infuriating language of the manufacturer - lawyers or site authors. However, sometimes it is very useful to read the terms of use - this “wall of text”, in order to be surprised that many (and probably almost all) services do not bear any responsibility and do not provide guarantees for the use of their services.
By the way, I recommend reading the terms of use of the Mail ru Cloud and Yandex.Disk. There are a lot of interesting things about responsibility for storing files posted there, etc.
At one time there was a scandal over the terms of use of the Mail ru Cloud, which were called the “License Agreement”. It was assumed that the user stores personal files in the Cloud at his own peril and risk, without any guarantees from Mail ru. After a lot of noise on the Internet about this, changes were made to the Mail ru License Agreement. By the way, this License Agreement in its latest version can be found at: cloud.mail.ru/LA/
Is there really a need to register on different sites? And who really needs it:
- users,
- website owners or
- website developers (programmers)?
What does registering on the site give?
Registration on the site (or authorization) is necessary primarily for site owners to create active communities and collect information about the target audience of their project. Registration data is used by the site administration to directly communicate with its users.
The site developer uses registration to install additional features on the site that would be difficult for guests to implement. For example, to set up a rating system, provide access to materials “not for everyone,” or to allow sending private (personal) messages.
If we talk about users, then they do not need to register on the site. Many of them try to avoid sites that require mandatory registration, especially if they visit the sites briefly and irregularly, for example, to download one file once.
Regular registration on the site - the first type of registration
Registration can be of several types. The first of these is regular registration, where there should be as few fields to fill out as possible. The ideal option includes only the fields: login, password and email address.
Administrators of many sites make the same common mistake: they require you to come up with a complex password consisting of a number of different numbers and letters, which creates additional inconvenience for the user.
In this case, it would be enough just to warn the person that the password he created is too simple and could be accessible to attackers. Which password to enter is the right of every user and should not be interfered with.
On the other hand, when entering passwords on sites such as online banking, users are advised to use the on-screen keyboard. This prevents the password from being read by a keylogger program that records all keystrokes on the computer keyboard.
A duplicate password is also not necessary, since many people make typos the first time. And using captcha (entering the text shown in the picture in a special field) cannot always protect against robots. It’s better to come up with some question that a person can easily answer, for example, how much is 2+2?
In any case, unnecessary fields such as date of birth or gender are not needed. The user, if desired, will be able to provide all this data after registering on the site by editing his profile. Additional fields should not be required to be filled out.
Registration on the site through social networks is the second type of registration
Another type of registration on a web resource is registration through various social networks (number 3 in Fig. 2). Recently, it has become the easiest for many users, since each of them has their own page in some similar service (VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).
This method allows site administrators to easily register a user who already has an account on a social network. And users will not need to re-register on yet another resource, coming up with a new password, login, or updating their email address.
However, there are also disadvantages here. The social network asks for permission to provide the user's personal data to the site. This scares many people away because they don’t trust the sites.
Invites - the third method of registration
The invite looks like a password consisting of letters and numbers. It is needed in order to register on the site where this registration method is used.
After registering via invite, you are given access to a closed section on the site or some other “only for our own” type of opportunity for those registered. I described possible options for why such complex access to registration on the site is needed, as well as how you can get an invite, in this article.
Trust but check
Of course, you should be careful when registering on sites. And think carefully before posting your personal data, especially bank card details, account numbers, etc.
You should always pay attention to the site address in the browser line. There are phishing sites - fake ones that look like real ones, like official sites. The address of a phishing site may differ from the address of a real site by just one number, or one letter, or, in general, one symbol. The design of the fake site completely coincides with the official site, it is difficult to distinguish, especially if you enter such sites using links sent by someone unknown and from where. If you leave your username and password on a phishing site, then this data immediately goes to the scammers.
You should also remember that you do not need to share your passwords with anyone, including employees of banks, postal services, etc.
Even on such a reputable site as, for example, the Russian Railways website, there was such a sad case as the theft of bank card data. I was partially affected by this, which I wrote about here. After that, the bank changed my virtual card for free for online payments, there were no other negative consequences. And I sometimes continue to use the Russian Railways website to purchase train tickets, it’s convenient.

What does re-registration mean?
It often happens that the user either forgot his login or password, or does not remember both of them combined. Also, a situation often occurs when a person is sure that the login and password have been entered correctly. But at the same time, an unpleasant red inscription still appears: “The login or password has been entered incorrectly.”
In such situations, you should make sure that the login and password are entered correctly. I wrote about how this can be done HERE using the Odnoklassniki social network as an example. The techniques described there for checking a password or login apply to all situations.
A good way out when you have forgotten your password is to click on the “Forgot your password” link. Then, following the instructions provided, you can try to recover your password.
However, some users do not make any attempts to restore their previous data: login or password. They decide that they need to undergo a new registration and the problem will be solved.
The problem with new registration is that the user becomes “new”. What does this mean?
Remember how they used to say at school when a new student came to class: “We have a new kid (new girl)!” With a new registration, all previously accumulated bonuses, points, subscriptions, previously purchased tickets, courses and other “goodies” that were “acquired through back-breaking labor” will automatically disappear. We will have to start all over again, that is, life will go “from scratch.” You will have to again earn karma, authority, bonuses, and other advantages of old clients of the site over new ones.
Alas, with a new registration, as a rule, it is no longer possible to restore those tickets, subscriptions, courses, bonuses, points that were stored during the previous registration.
When you register again, you automatically become “new to the Internet class.” This is probably good if there were problems in the “old” class, the karma was bad and needs to be gotten rid of. But if everything was good, there were merits in the form of some advantages (discounts, bonuses, etc.), then the new registration will safely bury the accumulated successes and life on the site will start all over again.
Similarities of concepts
You have already been able to see that registration and permanent registration have a lot in common. Here are the main similarities between the two definitions:
- Perpetual nature. Registration, as well as registration, are valid as long as the property where you are registered exists.
- Mandatory for every citizen of the country. You won’t be able to simply check out of your apartment; you will need consent to register somewhere else.
- Confirms property rights. Registration gives a person the right to dispose of real estate. If you have registered a person with you, you can only evict him through the court.
- Requires the consent of the homeowners. Registration of a person is possible only with the consent of all citizens living in the apartment. An exception is the acquisition of a share in an apartment. A person has the right to live on the territory that belongs to him. In addition, minor children can be registered without consent. The Constitution directly stipulates that children live with their parents.
- Imposes certain responsibilities. The registered person is obliged to monitor the technical condition of the apartment and pay utilities on time. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in eviction.
- Provides social benefits. Without permanent registration, you will not be able to get a job, educate your children, or rely on medical care.
Authorization: login after registration
Registration takes place once. Then, to log in to any resource, use the “Authorization” button.
Authorization on a website or application is a process in which a previously registered user enters his username and password so that the system can recognize him.
The word “authorization” comes from the English authorization, which means “authorization”, “authority”, “permission”.
Authorization on any website (or Internet resource) essentially means “re-entry” or “entrance after registration.” If there is an entrance to a site, then there should probably be an exit. But with the exit, not everything is as clear as with the entrance.
"N" and "nn" in passive participles
To understand how to write: “registered” or “registered”, you need to remember the rule that was studied back in the 8th grade during Russian language lessons. It’s worth starting with those cases when two letters “n” are written in the participle:
- If the word contains any prefix other than “not”. Here are some examples: “The company was unable to register for harvesting because the plowed field was already rented by someone,” “The participant was unable to register for the competition because he did not have the completed task with him,” and “Hotel registry, which included cleaned rooms , was completely filled." In all these cases, the words have a prefix, so two “n” are written in the suffix.
- If the participle is included in the participle phrase: “ fried on coals were much tastier than before”, “No one else saw the animal wounded by the hunter in the paw, but many were afraid to send a request to live in these places” and “We had to live in registered in accordance with all the rules, but the lawyers still tried to find fault with something.”
- If the participle was formed from a perfective verb that does not have a prefix: “ The abandoned things lay on the ground in the forest for almost a year”, “The already resolved issue continued to bring problems to the citizen who passed state registration” and “So given by the old man passed by ears, and you continue to carry out fraud with bank numbers.”
- If the participle was formed from a verb using the suffixes “ova”, “eva”, “irova”. Here are some examples of such words: “ pickled mushrooms”, “ shod horse”, “ repaired car” and so on. To determine this, it is enough to correctly recognize the verb, and then look at the part that was attached to it as a result of word formation. There are quite a lot of such words in the Russian language.
As for the spelling of one letter “n” in the suffix, it is found only in short participles. It is precisely this that acts as the main example of “registered” - “registered”. That is, in a full participle it is necessary to write a suffix with two “n” (formed by adding the suffix “irova” and has the prefix “for”), and in a short participle - with one. However, it is not only this part of the word that raises questions among aspiring writers or high school students.
Exit: what is it?
In modern smartphone applications, it is difficult to find a button or icon to exit, and often it is completely impossible. Your computer usually has a Sign Out option, but many users never use this feature. They came in once and never left again. This is good if the equipment always works, never fails, or you don’t need to create a second account on the site.
I think that if there is an opportunity to get out, then you need to take advantage of it. Of course, after leaving you will have to enter later. That is, you need to click on the “Authorization” button, enter your login and password.
Logging out and then logging in means maintaining security in some way, as well as training your own memory when entering your login and password.
Let's look at examples with buttons for registration and authorization for Yandex.Mail, Yoomoney, Russian Railways, Rostelecom, Facebook, VKontakte. The examples given work through a browser on a computer or smartphone.
There is no mention of smartphone apps here. The application is installed on the phone, personal data is entered for registration or authorization. And, as a rule, that’s all, then there are no more buttons for registration or authorization.
Video: Authorization and registration, why these are two big differences
Registration using third party sites
By this definition I mean registration using an account on social networks, through an OpenID identifier (an almost dead technology for the masses) and, separately, registration with an account in large systems like Google, Yandex and others. Yes, sometimes this is also OpenID inside, but for an outsider the very definition of “OpenID” is a fool’s errand.
Registration using third-party services on the Kinobaza website.
- The most painless way to register now is through an account on social networks and large projects like Google. It allows the site owner to quickly integrate into a social network, and most people do not have to register on another site: come up with a password, provide their email.
- OpenID is almost dead as a brand, but thriving as a technology. If you plan to give this opportunity to users, you should not mention this word: it misleads people and misunderstands them. It’s easier to write “log in using your account on the site” and the list: Google, Yandex, Odnoklassniki
- There is one pitfall in registering through third-party sites: after choosing a service, people are presented with a dialog asking for permission to access their personal data. And this is exactly the moment at which most registrations through social networks break down. If people don't trust the site, there's a high chance they won't give permission. However, trust is a topic for a completely different article.
An example of a dialogue requesting access to data on the Twitter website.
Yandex Mail: Create ID and Login
Rice.
1. “Create ID” and “Login” in Yandex.Mail. In Yandex.Mail, the “Create ID” button (number 1 in Fig. 1) is used to register a new mail address (email). ID (read “ay-di”) is part of the English word “identifier”, which can be translated as “identifier”.
“Create ID” means that you need to register, that is, create a new login and password for Yandex.Mail. Once the ID (login and password) has been registered, it can be used to use the entire Yandex ecosystem. Yandex has a lot of services, their number is constantly growing.
The “Login” button (2 in Fig. 1) is intended for those who have already registered once. In this case, you need to enter your username and password. After this, the mail with the received letters will open. If you make a new mail using “Create ID”, then there will not be the same letters that were in the old mail.
What are the differences
Temporary registration differs in many ways from permanent registration. Understanding the difference, we can highlight the following points:
- Issued for a specific period. Temporary registration is valid for no more than 5 years.
- Does not appear in the passport. Usually issued in the form of an additional certificate.
- It is more of an informational nature. If a person moves to another city, he is required to register within 90 days of arrival. First of all, the citizen himself is interested in this: without temporary registration, getting a job in another city is almost impossible. However, if a person moves to another apartment, which is located in the same locality and does not go through the registration procedure, it is almost impossible to track his movements and punish him for violation.
- Unlike registration, which an ordinary person cannot do without, many simply do not need temporary registration.
- Temporary registration does not give a person the right to dispose of real estate. Typically, a citizen’s period of residence in an apartment expires within the time frame specified in the lease agreement.
- Issued only with the consent of the property owner. If you want to live with a relative for a while, the latter must appear with you at the Federal Migration Service and fill out the form prescribed by law.
The main difference is responsibility. If there is no temporary registration, the citizen faces a fine of up to 5,000 rubles. Without a stamp in the passport, a person can be detained for three days until his identity is clarified.
Yumani: Create Wallet and Login
Rice.
2. In Yumani, you can create a new wallet or log into your old wallet. Yumani is electronic money, which was previously Yandex.Money. Then the service was acquired by Sberbank and changed its name. There was Yandex.Money, now there is Yumani.
The “Create wallet” button (number 1 in Figure 2) means the appearance of a new wallet, usually with a zero balance. Another “Login” button (2 in Fig. 3) allows you to log into the old wallet. Perhaps there are already rubles and accumulated points there.
Russian Railways: Registration or Login
Rice.
3. Russian Railways website: Registration and Login. The Login tab is shown open. RZD is short for Russian Railways. The Russian Railways website is intended for obtaining information about trains, schedules, and seat availability. To purchase train tickets, you need to create a personal account on the Russian Railways website, it is called “My Orders”.
To create a personal account for Russian Railways, as well as to log in, there is a single “Login” button in the upper right corner of the Russian Railways website (number 1 in Figure 3). By clicking on it, two tabs “Login” (3 in Fig. 3) and “Registration” (2 in Fig. 3) will appear.
To create a new personal account, click “Registration”. The new “My Orders” account will NOT contain tickets previously purchased on the Russian Railways website. After registration, you can only buy a new ticket there.
To access your previous account, you must use the “Login” button. There you can find tickets previously purchased on the Russian Railways website, as well as buy new tickets.
Rostelecom personal account: Register and Login
Rice.
4. Buttons “Register” and “Login” to your personal account on the Rostelecom website. On the Rostelecom website you can create a new personal account using the “Register” button (number 1 in Figure 4). In your personal account you can make payments, receive and spend bonuses, write requests to technical support, etc.
If a personal account has already been created, you should enter your login (or phone number, or email, or personal account) and password. After that, click on the orange “Login” button.
If you create a new account instead of the old one, then, unfortunately, all the points, bonuses and other goodies accumulated earlier will be lost.
History of the origin of terms
The institution of registration appeared in our country during the USSR. At that time, registration was a means of controlling the population and its movements around the country. Not everyone remembers that until 1974 all social groups except peasants (or collective farmers) could obtain registration. The villagers didn't even have passports.
Is it worth doing temporary registration and what risks are associated with it? Read here.
The village council issued a special document to the collective farmer, which gave him the right to move. The basis for this practice was legislation. In the 50-80s, there was another term that emphasized the peculiarities of Soviet registration - “limit”.
This video will tell you why a person should have registration:
Limiters are people (most often blue-collar workers) who have entered into a contract with an industrial enterprise for several years. The goal is to obtain an apartment and Moscow registration. This form of attraction was valued more than money. It is believed that the model of registration of that time is very close to modern registration at the place of residence.
Similarities between registration and registration
Registration and registration are currently synonymous. In fact, registration in Soviet times and registration now are still different concepts. Now the confusion has worsened, since everyone calls registration at the place of residence by the old word “propiska”. That is, an outdated concept is given a new meaning.
What is registration without the right to living space, read the link.
The similarities between these concepts are as follows:
- have no restrictions on validity period;
- to attract certain social guarantees, registration and registration are equally necessary;
- inextricably linked with housing;
- being responsible for timely payment of utilities;
- reflected as an address stamp in the passport;
- necessary for the exercise of certain rights (paperwork, receiving free medical care, etc.)
This similarity gives rise to confusion between these concepts.
The difference between registration and registration.
What is registration
Registration has always been and will be a way for the state to monitor the movements of people without interfering in their personal lives. A citizen can exercise some of his rights through registration.
For example, medical care and the associated assignment of patients to areas. Another example: joining future first-graders to schools by registration. You can get a job at some enterprises only through registration.
Although according to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, people have equal rights, regardless of whether they have a residence permit or not, in practice it is very difficult for someone who does not have one to realize their rights. For example, it is legally easy to obtain the right to official employment in a reputable organization, but in practice, the opportunity for a person without registration is zero.
In addition to employment, registering children in kindergartens and schools, as well as free medical care at the place of residence, there are a number of other advantages that registration gives a person:
- Obtaining the necessary documents: SNILS, medical policy, TIN, driver’s license, military ID.
- In the case where housing is municipal property, a citizen has the right to privatize it.
- The right to register children with you without obtaining approval from the property owner.
How to apply for registration and what documents are needed for this, details at the link.
Registration has always had a connotation of stability and guarantees of human rights. Previously, it was thanks to Moscow registration that a person received the right to certain benefits. Therefore, living in Moscow was prestigious. The issue of registration was considered by government organizations; they could also refuse a person in some cases.
What is registration and registration, watch in this video:
Previously, according to the rules, before a person could register in a new place, he had to check out of the old one. In fact, these rules, along with the term, have sunk into oblivion. In any case, for lawyers such a concept no longer exists. Of course, we still call the stamp in the passport a registration. This stamp indicates the citizen's address.
Registration is an outdated concept that currently has no legal meaning. In colloquial speech, propiska refers to registration at the place of residence or the stamp itself in the passport.
Facebook: Create an account and Login
Rice.
5. Facebook: Create an account and Login. A pensioner I know was actively mastering Facebook. He often sent repeated friend invitations because he was constantly creating new accounts. He could not get into the old account for various reasons. He needed a new registration because he never wrote down the old login and password, did not save it, did not remember it. He is sure that this is an unnecessary, tedious procedure for him.
At the same time, the acquaintance wondered why he had so few friends and why all the friends disappeared in the new account. How will Facebook figure out that this or that person has created several different accounts at once? By the way, if Facebook guesses, it can warn about incorrect actions, since it is advisable for one person to have one single account.
The “Create account” button (number 1 in Figure 5) is intended for creating a new personal page where there are no friends, and everything is “from scratch.” And the “Login” button is intended to enter a personal page that has already been registered, and perhaps there are already friends there.
"Not" in passive participles
Speaking about the word “registered”, one cannot fail to mention the rule that talks about the spelling of a word with a negative particle “not”. It’s worth starting with those points that talk about when it is written together:
- If the participle is not used without a negative particle at all. There are not too many such constructions in the Russian language, but one should never forget about their presence: “unwell”, “indignant”, “hated” and so on. This point is highest in the rules, so even if there is opposition or dependent words in the sentence, the participle will still be written together.
- If the participle is not part of the participle phrase. In other words, it must have no dependent words. However, they should not be confused with the construction being defined (the one from which the question is asked to the participle). Here are some simple examples: “uncleaned room”, uncollected things”, “unsolvable task” and so on. However, if the sentence contains clauses indicating separate writing, “not” will act as a particle.
- If the word contains the prefix “under”: “under-knitted sweater”, “underrated concert”, “unwashed dishes” and the like. However, it is important not to confuse them with those that appear together with the negative particle “not”, as well as with the preposition “before”. Here’s an example: “I couldn’t reach a knitted sweater or a wool scarf that was lying on the top shelf of the closet.”
Now a few words about in what cases the participles will be written separately from “not”. As in the previous case, it is customary to highlight three points:
- If the sentence contains a contrast with the conjunction “a” or “but”: “The athlete did not win, but participated in the competition” or “The vegetables were not boiled, but baked in the oven.”
- If the participle appears together with dependent words: “a question not asked by the teacher,” “a film not watched the day before,” “a letter not sent by mail.”
- All short participles in all cases.
Thus, the rule for writing “not” together and separately with participles is not anything complicated. It is enough just to know a few points and also be able to apply them in practice.
